What is Laser Hair Removal?

The laser removal of hair involves a gentle beam of light pulsed onto the skin and absorbed by the pigment in your hair. Like how a dark shirt absorbs sunlight, the pigment in your hair also absorbs light and converts it into heat.

When heated sufficiently, the stem cells that line the hair follicle are disabled and prevent the hair from ever returning.

The darker and thicker the hairs are, the lighter or fairer the skin will lead to more favourable results. This is because the energy from the laser is only absorbed by the hair and not by the skin. With darker skin types, the laser is attracted to the blood supply to the hair follicle.  The pigment in your hair follicle will absorb the light and heat, damaging the follicle enough to discourage further growth, with the hair eventually falling out.

 

Optimising your results

Preparation is important when it comes to laser hair removal.

Ensure you shave the area to be treated roughly 12 hours prior to your laser hair removal session. Make sure you avoid wax/depilatory cream, fake tan and getting sunburnt up to two weeks before your session. This is important, as the treatment uses a cosmetic laser that shoots a concentrated beam of light directly at the pigment in your hair follicles and will also sizzle any pigment on your skin, including tanning products.
